About

Hi! My name is Katie M. I’m a full-time wife, mother, and Jesus lover. I’m glad you’re here.

Here are some things you should know about me and about my blog.

I love coffee. Not the deepest or most surprising of revelations if you know me or my very active toddler, but there is a reason this one goes first. I have learned that in this season of life, brevity is a virtue. The time I have to work on this blog is about as much time as it takes to drink a cup of coffee. Being that this is in fact a “mom blog” – I assume that’s probably about as much time as you have to read it. Consider this my promise to keep it short and free of saccharine.

I’m a truth teller. It’s a passion of mine and frankly a bit of a burden to carry when you’re an East Coast girl living in the Midwest. I’m like your best friend in high school. (I had a lot of best friends in high school…) I’ll tell you when that dress isn’t working for you and when you’re acting like a crazy person. But I’ll also be the one to tell you how amazing and loved and valuable you are. I call ‘em like I see ‘em. But do take note: I like to get real and I like to get real on my blog. Sometimes you might find me ranting about some societal injustice. Other times, you may get the kind of honesty and vulnerability that leaves me feeling a little raw and exposed. If you’re not into that kind of thing, just keep scrolling. There’s other stuff here too. On the other hand, if you’re a judgemental troll – move along. Nothing to see here.

I’m a Christian. And I say that with trembling, knowing that it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. What it means to me is that I love Jesus. I care about what the Bible says. I care about how humans treat each other. It blows my mind how this ancient book can teach me so much about who I am and who God is and how that can impact every square inch of my life. What it doesn’t mean is that I have anything to do with those wacko Westboro Baptists. And upon encountering such bigots, I remind them who they’re supposed to be following and how they’re denigrating His name with their behaviour, and whenever possible, what He actually has to say about the issues on their picket signs.

I’m gluten intolerant. Nope, I don’t have Celiac and I’ve never been tested – it’s something I figured out by trying a simple elimination diet when I realized I was getting sick after every meal. So I am meticulous in ensuring my food is gluten-free and I love helping others try to figure out how to do that too. My husband and son are both sensitive to dairy so most of my cooking also tends to be dairy-free or easily modified to accommodate the lactose intolerant. I’ll be sure to share my favorite recipes here as I find them.

I’m one of those suuuuper creative people. I’ve probably done half the stuff on your Pinterest board. My creative endeavors include but are not limited to photography, knitting, crafting, painting, upcycling, singing, guitar playing, writing poetry, prose, and short stories. I’ll share some (hopefully) lovely photos of all these things along the way – maybe we can inspire each other! If you’re looking for examples of my professional photography, you can find them at either the Kaitlin Mackenzie Photography website or Facebook page

I’m all about trying new things. Especially makeup. Especially lipstick. I wouldn’t call myself the trendiest person in the world (seriously, the recent comeback of overalls makes me want to vomit) but I do like to be well-dressed and thoughtfully put together from head-to-toe. I also happen to enjoy helping others figure out their style and how to wear red lipstick. And I prefer to do all of this in a way that’s super flattering because…

I’m overweight. This is a battle I’ve fought my whole life and will probably continue for the rest of it. Unfortunately, it’s genetic. Fortunately, my refusal to accept defeat in this area is also genetic. I’m on a journey to better health right now. It includes Weight Watchers, my Fitbit, and fairly paleo tendencies. I’m not much for most processed foods. (But I’m not above gluten-free chicken nuggets. The struggle is real.) I’ll be writing about all of this too. What’s working for me, how I’m progressing, what’s good in the kitchen, and how the pursuit of health and wellness and happiness in weight loss are so much more than just numbers on a scale.

I don’t have it all figured out. Frankly, that’s what this blog is for. I’m an external processor and writing really helps with that. And the fact that it’s public just means there’s a chance that maybe we can figure this out together.
